LaineyAnn Brittain is patient. Her patience pays off, both at the plate and on the mound. Though only a sophomore, she has developed into one of the strongest hitters on the Haworth Lady Lions softball team. Haworth head softball coach Montie Gaston compliments the young star on both her innate abilities and her demeanor. “LaineyAnn is very strong at bat. She’s also very coachable.”

Organized high-school competition was canceled last spring, but LaineyAnn still worked on her game. She spent the spring and summer working with a hitting coach and improving her form, stance and swing. “I went to Texarkana (about a one-hour one-way drive from Haworth) to work with a batting coach and it helped me a lot.”

Brittain isn’t just a one-dimensional player, however. She also pitches and plays third base. The experience at the plate and on the mound are mutually beneficial when devising a strategy. “I think about what I would throw when I’m facing a pitcher; and then ‘What is she expecting’ when I’m facing a batter.”

Her favorite sport is softball and her favorite memory so far is hitting her first home run as a freshman at the Hugo tournament last year. Given her work ethic, dedication, and youth, she likely has many more round trips to the plate in her softball future. Despite her athleticism, LaineyAnn’s appeal as a player and teammate is much more than what winds up in the box score, as Coach Gaston explains. “She’s just really outgoing. A great kid.”

Her goals are not personal, but for her team. She wants the Lady Lions to advance in the playoffs. Her advice to younger girls who want to be good athletes is all about attitude, not mechanics. “Be patient and be coachable. Listen to what your coach is telling you and you’ll get better.”
